My best method of learning is through listening. If I can listen to what others have to say then I can learn from them more than I can learn from myself. I don’t learn quite as well from lectures though as much from discussions. I expect my 9th grade English teacher to include a lot of discussions in their class and to really let the students take over when a discussion begins. I also expect that when a discussion or debate starts to slow down and run dry, that they will pick it back up with a well thought out question. I do learn a little bit from my own writing, but it must be prompted with something that interests me. I expect my teacher to use a lot of classic literature because I think that we can and should learn from the past and one of the best ways is through old writings. Finally, I learn from technology. Even though it is not my favorite thing to use, I believe it is a useful classroom tool and it allows us to reach beyond the boundries of the classroom walls. My teacher should integrate it into the class in as many ways as possible but without making it boring or less effective than more traditional ways. If my teacher can use even some of these methods to teach me, then I am certain to learn something in the year to come.

Is a digital legacy really a good thing? I mean do we really want to be remembered by technolgy only. If I were to spend my entire life working on something on the interenet, and then find that no one has read it or looked at it or even heard of it. Why would someone take such a risk with their lives to find that their life was wasted? And even if people did at some point encounter this legacy, what difference would it make? I personally don't want my legacy to be connected with the interenet in any way. I would want my legacy to directly influence people and their lives right when I do it, and I want it to pass from them to others. I want to make sure I make a difference rather than just hoping for it.

Television is probably one of the best and worst things in society. Before, world news, events, and affairs took months to reach people. Now there is news on every channel at 5, 6:30, 7, 9, and 10 o'clock and if anything important should happen, the world will know about it in minutes. I guess this can be viewed as good or bad because the media will do whatever it takes to get a good story, even twist one to the limits of truth, but we hear the news nonetheless. Another good/bad aspect of television is that it offers entertainment. Over time, however, people have lost interest in that which was actually entertaining to watching people gamble on game shows (rather than play them) and watching people stab each other in the back with reality T.V. The nastier the show is, the higher the ratings and the more money there is to be made. Shows that offered the good, clean entertainment are slowly being taken off the air or moved to obscure channels that are only obtainable through expensive cable or satellite packages. Not that there aren't good shows on anymore, but many of them have gone downhill from where they started. Television is good at times and bad at times, but how long can that last?

Chivalry is courtesy towards women according to dictionary.com. That usually included holding a door for a lady, letting her go first in everything that did not require a man to go first, offering her a seat when no others were availible, and gracefully accepting chivalrous acts. These were things that men were taught when they were boys and girls were taught how to accept these courtesies and that they should expect this. As time has continued on, women have begun to be unthankful for the things men would do for them. Men have stopped acting chivalrous to an extent. You always hear people complain that men think their better than women, but they brought it upon themselves by not accepting such chivalrous acts. I was told that it is the woman's duty as much as the man's to take part in chivalry. It is neither gender's fault in particular that chivalry is dying, but if neither takes action, it will be dead forever.

Expectations for people have faded. Over time, we've come to expect the least from people and are surprised when they do what they are supposed to do. I've seen people ask for rewards for doing what they are told to do, what they are expected to do, but the expectations mean nothing. Mediocre has become exceptional and awful has become average. An example of people's expectations for, say teenagers, are that they do their homework and don't argue with or disobey their parents more than thrice a week. Long ago, if a child didn't meet their parents expectations, they were either thrown out or kept but as a disgrace. I guess we got tired of trying to meet our own expectations for ourselves and the expectations of others for us. We got lazy and decided enough to get by was enough for us. We need to raise our expectations before they lower themselves into nonexistance.

Guitar Hero or Dance-Dance, which is better? Well of course it’s Guitar Hero. It doesn’t tire you out like DDR, and it’s just as easy to play if not easier. It’s songs are much more well known and are sung by the original singers rather than the famousish songs on DDR that are sung by people you’ve never heard of or care about. Guitar Hero is much easier to learn to play on the harder levels and the game relates to the music much more. Dance Dance does have more games and songs to choose from, but a lot of the songs are too difficult or too easy and some don’t even interest the dancer. Although this also applies to Guitar Hero, it’s on a much smaller scale and doesn’t affect the player as much. When people choose to play one of these video games, Guitar Hero should always be the first choice.

Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.

                                                                                     Proverbs 17:28
People are too outspoken. They rarely think about what they are going to say or what it could mean to those they say it to. Things are thrown out into the open where they are neither needed nor wanted and once they are out they won’t be allowed back in. The ”verbal diarrhea” of the world is at an all time high. Friendships and relationships can be destroyed by a simple phrase or sentence that was not meant. Another part of the world’s lack of discernment when speaking is gossip and rumours. We talk about others and make up lies to satisfy our own needs for attention. Then things get spread around and eventually hurt the person involved whether the rumour be true or false. Secrets are rarely kept and trust is very non-existant in a world that encourages the degrading of other people through the use of celebrity tabloids and media. Words are very powerful things and shouldn’t be taken as lightly as they are now. Watch your words for they have consequences.

“Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.” Frank Outlaw

Knowledge and wisdom are sometimes confused with each other. They’re sometimes thought to be the same thing or coinciding things. By definition, knowledge is the fact or state of knowing. Wisdom is knowing what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action. In simpler terms, knowledge is knowing the facts and wisdom is knowing what is right and what is wrong. They may not seem different when you look at them, but when you ask people who pursue one of them, they will tell you the difference in clear detail. I guess some people don’t know the difference because they don’t care about either. If neither matters to you, then you probably won’t or don’t have a very happy life. Knowledge and wisdom are some of the most important things a person can have, pursue them.

You prove to your parents that you’ve learned something through actions. If you’ve talked about nonconformity in your class and it affected you, then your parents should notice a change in your behavior from conformist to nonconformist. If you talk about feminism in the past and women demanding respect and rights, you may have a change in attitude towards females. You can’t prove you’ve learned something through talking because when you talk you can lie and just repeat what was discussed in class. In order to prove that you’ve learned something, your parents have to have an open mind. You may have gotten nothing out of the class that you were meant to learn, but you may have learned a ton of things through thinking things in the class. Proving you’ve learned something takes work on both sides, but it can be done.

The 10 are contrabass, bass, baritone (my saxophone), tenor, C tenor, alto, F mezzo-soprano, soprano, C soprano, and sopranino. I prefer the former 4 because I love bass sounds and big instruments. The bari sax, which is what I play because it’s the biggest saxophone I can get my hands on, is about 3-4 feet tall and can go down much lower than the regularly played alto of my level or even the tenor which is the most common saxophone. I want to play the contrabass someday because of my previously listed reasons and because it goes an entire octave below the bari sax. I hope to pursue my skills in the field of saxophones, especially contrabass.

Clearly spiderman is the better of the 2.

It is a distant memory. Even if it’s just the common cold, you wish you could remember breathing clearly through your nose, or having a clear head. If it’s something more complicated like cancer (though I’ve never had it) after time, you might forget what it was like to have hair. And when we’re healthy, we have a hard time with sympathy for the sick because you can’t feel what they have. We always take health for granted, or at least I know I do. We should be happy for our health every day and be glad for its return when we’re sick.

Today, we discussed multiple aspects of learning. To go along with the personal curriculum, one aspect of learning is interest. Children sit through classes that they have no personal interest in because they are forced to do so. What do these kids take away from it? Almost nothing. You have to have a little bit of interest in a topic to learn about it. By doing the personal curriculum, we get to learn exactly what we want to learn in a learning environment. We have ambition when we want to learn something and we most likely keep what we learn because it was learned with enthusiasm. Learning is supposed to be fun, and when we take it upon ourselves to do it, it can be accomplished as we want it to be.

What do blind people see? What do deaf people hear? What do mute people say? These people truly live in their own worlds. They have the best of imaginations. A blind person can make things whatever they want them to be. A deaf person can make music in their heads without the interruptions of the world. These people are also spared some of the things in the world today. They don’t have to see the horrible things that people can do to each other, and they don’t have to hear the words of sadness and terror. Although they may know of such things, they never have to experience them. Deaf people are free from hearing ridicule and insult and the blind are free of seeing things that are repulsive. They are always looked at like they need our help, like luck has abandoned them, but really, they are the lucky ones.

How many of you can build a fire? How many can make a meal from scratch? The world has abandoned skill to convenience. I’m not saying that I can do these things, but our survival has turned from not having enough to eat and keeping warm to having better transportation than our feet and keeping ourselves from being bored. Life has changed a lot from times when we needed to keep ourselves alive rather than entertained or convenienced. People invented things like cars and television to make life “better” for everyone, but look at where the U.S. is now. The country is obese because of convenience, because they can sit around watching television or playing video games, or they don’t walk anywhere. Not saying you should wake up at 3 a.m. so that you can walk the 20 miles to work, but, when the weather permits, why can’t people walk to the grocery store or library? Maybe people have forgotten the feeling you get from doing things for yourself, rather than letting a machine do it. I personally hope that the world of the Jetsons with flying cars, teleportation machines, and one-person elevators never comes to be, for thanthis would be the ultimate time of laziness (better known as ‘convenience’). Not all things learned from the past have to be mistakes. There were good things that people did, we should learn from those, too.

It is a common phrase in itself; “Common Sense”. What is it? It is born reason and logic, it is in the most common terms, instinct. But common sense is becoming a rarity. It is really more uncommon than its title suggests. Perhaps it is becoming scarcer because there are few who know they need it, others think little of it until it is of use to them, but when that time comes, they have forgotten it.” Why have something you ‘don’t need’?”, they may think in a world now where worries are nearly nonexistant. It is preparation that they lack, for preparation is part of common sense itself. The world may not be in the mess it is in today if people used the common sense they have. Do yourself and the world a favor, keep yours.

Disclaimer: This post is not meant to offend anyone, it’s just giving the other side of the story of veganism.

A vegan is, by definition, a strict vegetarian who consumes no animal food or dairy products and does not use animal products. Veganism is a belief just like Christianity or Islam. It requires that you live your life by it. My thoughts on this are that veganism is an extension of vegetarianism by the ignorant. I say ignorance because they act without knowing the true facts. Here are some of the facts from a agricultural point of view:

Fact #1: Vegans cannot eat dairy. Many think it is a crime to take away the milk of a cow from its calf or that it is cruel and unnatural to milk a cow.

The truth is that cows have four teats and 1 calf on average. 1 calf cannot possibly drink all the milk it’s mother produces and it is weaned before its mother stops producing milk. Cows need to be milked everyday because if they are not milked, their udders will become swollen and sore. The milking machines that are used in modern farming are also thought to be inhumane to the cows by vegans, but they are designed to simulate a calf sucking on the teats. The fact is that cows need to be milked and it does neither them nor their calves any harm to use the milk in an efficient and useful manner.

Fact #2: Wearing wool is inhumane because you are taking away the animals protection.

Shearing sheep is a little like milking a cow. It does the sheep no harm whatsoever unless the shearer is unexperienced, which is very rare. Sheep grow wool continuously. If they are not sheared at least once per year they can become very uncomfortable and stressed, especially when it is hot and humid. The wool will become matted and more difficult to shear if it is not removed in a timely basis. When sheep are sheared, it is the equivalent of us getting a haircut, except that wool is very useful and can be used to make blankets and clothing. There really is no reason not to use fleece unless you are allergic or of similar difficulty.

Fact #3: Everyone can get along just fine without exploiting or using animal products.

This “fact” bothers me the most. Yes some people can get along without meat or animal products, but these people have jobs such as journalism or being a lawyer. What those who use this fact to defend veganism often forget is people. Here are some facts from the Future Farmers of America (FFA) website about the people behind the animals:

1. Agriculture is the nation’s largest employer with more than 22 million people working in some phase-from growing food and fiber to selling it at the supermarket.

2. There are 2.19 million farms in the United States. The average size of U.S. farms in 1999 was 432 acres.

3. Individuals, family partnerships or family corporations own 99% of U.S. farms with fewer than 10 stockholders. Non-family corporations own only 0.4% of America’s farms and ranches. (Many vegans argue about inhumane treatment of animals, but this is only on non-family farms or factory farms…also, 4.5 Farmers and ranchers provide food and habitat for 75% of the nation’s wildlife.)

4. The American farmer regains 20¢ of every dollar in agricultural products sold, 39¢ goes to labor, 6¢ goes to taxes and interest, 8.5¢ goes to packaging and the remainder goes to fuel, electricity, transportation, advertising, etc.

As you can see from just these 4 and a half facts, if everyone were to become vegan, thousands of people would go bankrupt. There are so many people in the world that live off the money they make from farming. If the world went vegan, economy would fall into chaos and world hunger would skyrocket. It’s fine for the vegan population now, but the entire world couldn’t survive vegan.

Veganism is an honorable belief because it takes such discipline and hard work to keep up with what you can and cannot do. It’s just another belief in the world.

How do we communicate? How can you tell what I’m saying right now? What is language? Dictionary.com says that language is: a body of words and the systems for their use common to a people who are of the same community or nation, the same geographical area, or the same cultural tradition. That definition is a little too formal for me. To me, language is a way to convey to others what you think. Languages are very widely dispersed. I guess that if it wasn’t for the Tower of Babel, we would all speak the same language. What would that be like? We would all be able to work together better and society wouldn’t be so disoriented and destructive. However, until we all speak the same language, we’ll have to make do with what we can do with our differences.

Hoe communiceren wij?

Was ist Sprache?

Come comunichiamo?

3 men went to a banquet with the king. They sat two on one side and one on the other side of the king. When the feast bean, only 2 of the men spoke. One was foolish in his words and spoke without thought. He angered the king with unintentional insults and so, was thrown into prison.

The second man was a guest from a distant land. He boasted of his land’s militia and of the war his home was planning against his host. Because of his careless words, the king was aware of the plots against him and was prepared. The man was held as a hostage because o his bragging.

Only 1 man of the 3 remained. He chose his words carefully throughout the banquet, speaking only of good things toward the king. The king found favor with him because of his kind words and rewarded him, for he who holds his tongue finds rewards.

There are two kinds of writers. Those who can start a story, and those who can carry a story on. I’m the kind who can start a story. These would make some cool tales, but I don’t have the time or patience to carry them on. So these are for all you writers who can make a story an adventure.

1. It happened on the day the circus came to town.

2. When the elephant sat on him, I knew it was all over.

3. “3…2…1, Throw!!!” And the potatoes were flying throught the air.

4. The last time I saw a Blue-Footed Booby…

5. The beaver turned to me and said…

6. The car drove by,, and that’s when I saw him. How could he be driving the car when he died 6 years ago?

7. The chickens were going crazy and all was in chaos.

8.All I could think about was, ” How do we get the kite out of the tree without falling off the cliff?”

9. It was a clear night. Too clear. That’s when it hit me… THE STARS WERE GONE!!!!!!

10. You don’t really think about your life until your backed into a corner by an angry giraffe. (more…)

We’ve all thought about it, what would I do with super powers? Flying? Super strength? X-ray vision? I know which one I would want. I would want to speak every language, but most of all I would want to speak to animals and trees. Just trees, not other plants. I want to talk to trees, because they have seen hundreds of years of human history. What would they tell us if they could talk. Imagine if the trees of the time of the founding fathers of
America were able to talk. We would have no more questions about history. Some people might wonder, “Why only trees, why not all plants?” Talking to other plants would be like talking to children. Nothing against that, but you always expect what you are going to hear, they don’t tell you anything new. There are few plants older than ourselves. But trees are not the only non-human organisms I would communicate with. Animals. What would they tell us? Their world is very different than ours. There is little room for luxury, only necessity. This is the world I would choose for reasons I could never explain. I’m sure this is This is the super power I would choose. It’s not exactly a “save the world” type of power, but it’s good enough for me.

We aren’t given much time here, but it is what we do with that time that defines us better than how long we live. Many people do important things like saving the world or trying to take it over. I didn’t say that we would be remembered for all the good things, I mean, who’s heard of Hitler? That’s right, everyone, but that doesn’t mean he is known for being a great man, he is just remembered. My choices will not earn me an eternal place in history like Einstein or Jesus, but maybe I can do things that are important enough for me to remember them. Here are the things I want to do with MY time:

1. Get a Diploma on time
2. Graduate from college with a master’s in Veternary Medicine

3. Move to Kenya for a few years to study and help the animals

4. Travel around Europe

5. Learn German

6. Drive a Smart Car

7. Own a Dodge Ram 3500 in Inferno Red Crystal Pearl

8. Own a speedboat

9. Never break my wrist again

10. Go to Kansas to visit Sarah

11. Have an Irish Wolfhound as a pet

12. Have a German Shepherd as a pet

13. Own a farm in southern Minnesota

14. Get married

15. Open a successful veterinary practice

16. Go fishing in Canada

17. Go 4-wheeling down a landing strip

18. Not get caught 4-wheeling down a landing strip

19. Fly across the Pacific

20. See a Great White shark

21. Make an afghan

22. Try sushi

23. Ride an elephant in India

24. Run a successful big cat rescue

25. Have as a pet a lion named Felix

This is currently an unfinished list. It will soon and frequently be added to.

Where do you want to go? Mexico, France, China…Canada? What do you want to see? My dream is to see Kenya. Though it is on the coast, it is still the heart of Africa. Many people go to Kenya to see the city and people. I want to go to see the wildlife. I want to see lions, african wild dogs, zebras, and all the other creatures to be found there. The place I want to see these animals the most is the Masai Mara reserve. My fascination with the beings of Kenya has led me to want to go there and see them for myself. Where will you go? What will you see? And most importantly, why?

The Perfect Vehicle. What is it to you? A Mustang? A Viper? A Lamborghini? It’s all a matter of opinion isn’t it? For some people, the perfect vehicle is a Corolla, a Pilot, or even a Yaris. (Nothing against any of these vehicles, they are all great machines). For me, a pick-up is the best. It really doesn’t matter what kind to me, but my favorite brands are Dodge, Toyota, and Nissan. My wish list of trucks numbers 6,though I am sure that many will be added on in future years. My favorite Toyotas are a black Tacoma and a silver Tundra. My favorite Dodges are an “Inferno Red Crystal Pearl” Ram 3500 Mega Cab and a black Dakota Club Cab. And finally, my Nissan picks are the only 2 trucks they make, a silver Frontier and a red Titan. I realize my tastes in vehicles are a bit different from the normal peoples choices, but I guess that’s just an example of diversity. We all have a perfect vehicle, what’s yours?

The world is divided. We are all blind to others. Selfishness has taken over. There are few who don’t look out for anyone but #1. I don’t mean devote your life to the good of mankind, but why can’t we let the other one get what they want sometimes. One thing my father never fails to mention when me or my sister start to sound selfish, is “IWWIWWIWI”. I For those of you who don’t know what it means, I will tell you, it means, ” I Want What I Want, When I Want It”. Isn’t that the philosophy of the world, of America? We want what we want the instant we think that we want it. But then again, who really knows what they want? Do you really think of all the possible outcomes of what you want to have? To say? … To do? How do your words, your actions affect others? Think before you speak. Think before you act. Think before you want.

Recently, a friend of mine lost a family member. Even though this family member had 4 legs and a tail, he was nonetheless a family member. I only met him once, but that was enough for me to fall in love with him. I’ve only had one loss in my family (though I’ve had more than enough close calls with almost everyone else), but one is enough to know that it’s like having a stake drilled though your chest and pulled out. It’s like your missing a part of yourself. The pain slowly drains away, but every time you think about it, it comes rushing back. Losing someone, no matter if it’s human or dog, is something that no one should have to go through, but I guess it’s just life, it’s the way things have to be. For now.

The age old question, Where did we come from? How did we come to be? Many theories have been formed, many of the same nature. My only question to the lot of them is, How can we be so arrogant as to think that this came from nothing, that we are the most advance and most powerful being out there? How can we be okay with ourselves in saying “It all happened by chance”? Let’s imagine for a moment that evolution and the Big Bang and all those other … “interesting” ideas really exist. Who is comfortable with the notion that, because we spontaneously came into existance, we have nowhere to go once we die? That’s it, the end, kaput, FIN. I don’t like that idea too much myself either, but hey, we don’t have a choice, do we because we just appeared, so why wouldn’t we just disappear? Then of course, there is the fact we are goo that came out of the earth. I know that in other beliefs we are dust, but I choose dust over primordial ooze every day. My point is, that we should not think of ourselves so highly in such a way. We shouldn’t think that we’re so smart because we figured out the secrets of the Universe, because there were no secrets to begin with. We need to remember that we are not the best. Humility is a dying quality in this supermodern world.

The World without Technology? Oh,what ever would we do? No more iPods, no more computers, no more T.V. The world could never go on without technology! The human race would die out. But wait, didn’t there used to be this time when there were no iPods. Didn’t the world go through a time of darkness without electricity and media. Oh, that’s right, there hasn’t always been electricity. People got along just fine without telephones and television. I guess that the human race CAN live without technology.UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!! We don’t need it to survive, it’s just that, well, like cigarettes and alcohol, technology is addictive. You used to drive around and when you saw someone talking to themselves, it was obvious that they were crazy, but now, you don’t give them a passing glance because you know they have an earpiece in. Kids’ rooms are covered in technology too. iPods, computers, televisions, stereos, and other pieces of technology the world has introduced to everyone but me. Technology isn’t a bad thing, but if it keeps advancing the way it is, the world will become an unhappy, unfeeling place. Don’t let it happen.
