Saxophones

January 31, 2007

There are 10 varieties of saxophone, but in my mind, there’s only 4. The 10 are contrabass, bass, baritone (my saxophone), tenor, C tenor, alto, F mezzo-soprano, soprano, C soprano, and sopranino. I prefer the former 4 because I love bass sounds and big instruments. The bari sax, which is what I play because it’s the biggest saxophone I can get my hands on, is about 3-4 feet tall and can go down much lower than the regularly played alto of my level or even the tenor which is the most common saxophone. I want to play the contrabass someday because of my previously listed reasons and because it goes an entire octave below the bari sax. I hope to pursue my skills in the field of saxophones, especially contrabass.

Spiderman vs. “Super”man

January 23, 2007

This post is for the certain few *cough*rubyredslippers*cough* who seem to have the silly notion in their noggin that superman is better than Spiderman. There are so many reasons that Spiderman is better. First of all is that people like him better. On google, if you type “superman” you get about 2,010,000 sites .If you type “spiderman”, you will get about 4,530,000 sites to go to. That’s more than twice as much. Spiderman also has had 3 high quality movies in the last 5 years while superman has had 1. So clearly spiderman is the favorite among the people. Then there’s the fact that superman has a weakness. There’s no such thing for spiderman. During the day, superman is a geeky reporter while spiderman is a photographer of superheroes. Then of course there’s spidey’s super powers. He can spin webs and stick to walls. Who could possibly think that heat vision and flying is better? Clearly spiderman is the better of the 2.

Being sick is one of the worst things that can happen to you. You feel like your life has always been that way and you can’t remember being healthy. It is a distant memory. Even if it’s just the common cold, you wish you could remember breathing clearly through your nose, or having a clear head. If it’s something more complicated like cancer (though I’ve never had it) after time, you might forget what it was like to have hair. And when we’re healthy, we have a hard time with sympathy for the sick because you can’t feel what they have. We always take health for granted, or at least I know I do. We should be happy for our health every day and be glad for its return when we’re sick.

Learning

January 11, 2007

Today, we discussed multiple aspects of learning. To go along with the personal curriculum, one aspect of learning is interest. Children sit through classes that they have no personal interest in because they are forced to do so. What do these kids take away from it? Almost nothing. You have to have a little bit of interest in a topic to learn about it. By doing the personal curriculum, we get to learn exactly what we want to learn in a learning environment. We have ambition when we want to learn something and we most likely keep what we learn because it was learned with enthusiasm. Learning is supposed to be fun, and when we take it upon ourselves to do it, it can be accomplished as we want it to be.

Personal Curriculum

January 2, 2007

1. I want to learn to play as many instruments as I possibly can. My number is about 4 right now with trumpet, clarinet, piano, and saxophone (5 if you count kazoo). I would like to learn how to play the violin next.

What I need: A violin, a bow, a fingering chart, information on how to use the violin

2. I would like to learn how to carry on a conversation (or argument) in English from the 18th and 19th centuries.

What I need: Books from this time period, information on these times

3. The third thing that I would like to learn this semester is the way a car engine works in detail. I want to be able to tell what everything is in it and how it works together.

What I need: An engine to look at, books on car engines
This is my personal curriculum for the semester.
